Below are a few photos showing the progress of the
new building. Right now we are in the first stages of clearing and preparing
the plantation. The next step will be building a fence to secure the
building materials.
The plantation has
a path that the locals use as a walking road. This will have to
be moved to the outer edges of the plantation.
Regrettably we needed to remove about
25 older trees. They will be replaced.
Volunteers and local hired hands work
by
hand to cut down and remove the trees.
The trees are removed by locals. They
will
most likely use the wood for firewood.
Oxen pull the wagon. Everything is done
manually, which makes the task at hand
slow. Labor is very affordable in Haiti.
Volunteers work to dig trenches.
If you look closely you can see the trenches
trailing through the property. In the background are workers,
which gives you a perspective of the size of the donated property.
Yet another trench.
We needed to construct a road to the
orphanage from the main road, almost
two blocks long.
As you can see, the hole for the cesspool
is quite large. Keep in mind, this was all dug by hand.
One of the cesspools (we dug two).
At the end of the week, there was still
room for church. The voluneers and several of the children in the
orphanage pile into the truck and go to church.
